Celebrating Heritage Through Photography: An Indigenous People's Day Story

​We were excited to photograph and document the amazing Indigenous People's Day event hosted by the Children's Museum and Theatre of Maine in Portland, Maine (located at Thompson's Point) in 2023.

​The museum celebrated the occasion with a special Wabanki event, coinciding with the opening of a new outdoor exhibit and playground focused on educating and engaging children about Maine's indigenous Wabanaki tribes. Families came together to enjoy the new space and celebrate the indigenous artist behind its creation. Musicians and cultural educators led the crowd in song and dance, creating a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere.

​Documenting the joy, peace, and acceptance shared by everyone who participated in the Indigenous People's Day event was a truly enriching experience. My background as a Latina photographer running my own business in Maine, combined with my Native American ancestry, made this event particularly meaningful to me.
